A swap-free account is a trading account that doesn’t charge or pay the overnight “swap” fee normally applied when you hold a leveraged position past the daily rollover. Because that swap is a form of interest, removing it lets Muslim traders trade in line with Sharia principles, which is why a swap-free account is also called an Islamic account. It’s also popular with anyone who holds trades for several days.

If you’ve come across the term “swap-free” and weren’t sure what it means, this guide explains it in plain English, starting with the thing a swap-free account actually removes: the swap.

First, what is a swap?

A swap, also called a rollover, is an interest fee that a broker charges or pays when you keep a leveraged trade open overnight. When you trade forex or CFDs on margin, you’re effectively borrowing to hold a larger position, and each currency involved carries its own interest rate. At a set time each day (the daily “rollover”, usually around 21:00–22:00 GMT), the difference between those interest rates is applied to your open position as a small credit or, more often, a charge.

Hold a position for several days and those overnight swaps add up. (Most brokers also apply a “triple swap” once a week, usually Wednesday, to cover the weekend.) The key point for this guide: because a swap is based on interest, it’s exactly the part of conventional trading that conflicts with the Islamic prohibition of riba (interest).

So what does “swap-free” mean?

A swap-free account removes that overnight interest entirely. You can hold a position past the daily rollover and across several days, without a swap being charged or credited. Everything else about the account works normally: the same markets, the same platform, the same execution. The only difference is that the interest-based overnight fee is gone.

Why swap-free accounts exist

The main reason is faith. In Islam, earning or paying riba (interest) is prohibited, and the overnight swap is a clear example of it. A swap-free account was created so Muslim traders can access the markets without that obstacle, which is why “swap-free” and “Islamic account” mean the same thing. Removing the swap addresses the biggest single objection to conventional trading; for the fuller scholarly picture, see our guide Is Forex Trading Halal?

How does a swap-free account work?

Instead of charging overnight interest, a broker may cover its costs in another way, typically a fixed administration fee or a slightly wider spread. That’s normal, but there’s one thing to check: a genuine swap-free fee should be fixed, not a charge that grows the longer you hold a position. A fee that scales with time is effectively interest by another name, which defeats the purpose. Our Islamic Trading Accounts guide explains exactly what to look for.

Who is a swap-free account for?

  • Muslim traders who need to trade without paying or receiving interest (riba), the primary purpose.
  • Swing and position traders who hold trades for days or weeks and want to avoid swap charges stacking up over time.
  • Anyone who values simplicity, a predictable cost structure without overnight interest to track.

Frequently asked questions

What is a swap-free account?

A trading account that doesn’t charge or pay the overnight swap (interest) fee applied when you hold a leveraged position past the daily rollover. It lets Muslim traders trade without riba and is also called an Islamic account.

What does swap-free mean?

It means no overnight interest (swap) is charged or credited on positions held past the daily rollover. You can hold trades overnight or for days without that interest-based fee.

How does a swap-free account work?

It removes the overnight swap. To cover costs, a broker may apply a fixed administration fee or a slightly wider spread instead, ideally a fixed charge, not one that grows the longer you hold.

Is a swap-free account completely free?

No. There’s no overnight interest, but you still pay the spread and possibly a fixed admin fee. Swap-free removes riba, not all trading costs.

Is a swap-free account the same as an Islamic account?

Yes. The terms are used interchangeably: both describe an account with no interest-based overnight swap, designed to align with Islamic principles.

Does a swap-free account make trading halal?

It removes the main obstacle, interest. Whether your overall trading is halal also depends on how and what you trade, and scholars differ.
