ATR is a volatility indicator that measures how much a currency pair typically moves over a set period, usually 14. It averages the true range, the greatest of the current high-low distance and the gaps from the prior close, to produce a single value. A rising ATR signals increasing volatility, a falling ATR signals calmer markets. ATR measures the size of movement, not its direction.

Traders place stops a multiple of ATR away from entry, often 1.5 to 2 times the current ATR, so the stop sits beyond normal market noise. This adapts to volatility: wider stops when the market is active, tighter stops when it is quiet, reducing the chance of being stopped out by random fluctuations. Combine ATR stops with proper position sizing and never risk more than you can afford.

ATR lets you size trades by volatility rather than a fixed pip distance. First decide the cash amount you are willing to risk, then set your stop as an ATR multiple to find the distance in pips. Dividing your risk amount by that stop distance gives a position size that keeps risk consistent across pairs and conditions. This is important with leveraged CFDs, where volatility magnifies both gains and losses.

A high ATR means the pair is moving in large ranges, reflecting strong volatility often tied to news or fast trends. A low ATR means small ranges and a quiet, possibly consolidating market. ATR is measured in the price’s own units, so compare it to the pair’s recent history rather than across different instruments. Remember ATR shows volatility magnitude only, giving no indication of direction.
